Explore the Art of Cinematic Lighting in Stills
A Practical Boudoir Workshop January 30th 2025
Introduction to Our Workshop Series:
Welcome to the inaugural session of our workshop series held right here in our studio, focusing on the art of cinematic lighting. This workshop, limited to just four attendees per session, is part of a bi-monthly series designed to provide an intimate learning experience. Our goal is to offer a personalized approach to teaching, ensuring that each participant not only understands the techniques discussed but also feels confident in applying them to their own photography. By combining hands-on shooting opportunities with expert guidance, we aim to help you capture stunning additions for your portfolio.

Who am I? Why should you listen to me at all?
Hey there, I’m Wes Young!
Photography and filmmaking have been my playgrounds since I was a teen. It all started with helping out with local TV commercial shoots, which was pretty cool and taught me a lot right from the get-go. After that, I dabbled in some freelance photography gigs and eventually got into making my own short films.
I did a stint as a professional grip and a gaffer where I honed my skills on set. In these roles, I mastered the craft of lighting—sculpting light to not just illuminate, but to tell stories.
I’ve also been behind the camera as a cinematographer for various movie projects. You might even find my name on IMDb if you’re curious!

I spent 5 years down in L.A. teaching people about cameras as a trainer at Sony and at Bel-Air Camera, one of the most storied camera shops in the U.S. (sadly closed in 2015). All these chapters in my career have given me a pretty unique set of skills that I love sharing with others who are as excited about photography as I am.
These days, I’m all about bringing that movie magic into photography. That is the goal of my workshops. I believe every photo can feel as epic as a movie scene. If that sounds like something you’re into, I’d love to help you level up your photography game.
Let’s make some awesome images together!
Workshop #1
Explore the Art of Cinematic Lighting in Stills: A Practical Boudoir Workshop January 2025
All images shown on this page are using lights to mimic natural or practical lights.
There is some natural light in these images, mostly providing ambient light. The predominate light is using controllable constant LED lights. The light through the windows is also mostly an LED light.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is tailored for photographers who are well-acquainted with their cameras yet yearn to delve deeper into the art of lighting. It’s perfect for those who can capture fantastic images but want to learn how to sculpt light to transform good shots into truly mind-blowing photographs.
Overview:
Dive into the world of cinematic lighting with our focused workshop designed for photographers aiming to master both simple and intermediate constant light techniques. We will cover techniques that create a natural feeling and don’t feel like the image was “lit” with lights. This session is specially curated for boudoir photography, offering more than just a chance to enhance your portfolio—it’s a learning experience.
What We’ll Cover:
Lighting Design Mastery: Learn to set up and manipulate lighting without a model, understand light mechanics, and create depth in your compositions—all within the first hour.
Practical Techniques, No Excess Jargon: Avoid the complexities of light theory. Instead, we focus on practical, cause-and-effect strategies that you can see and replicate. Discover what to look for in lighting setups that you can easily recreate.
Live Demonstration with a Professional Model: Once our model arrives, we’ll shift to a dynamic session demonstrating light interaction with the model. Learn what to watch for and what to avoid, and how to adjust on the fly—ensuring you’re never stuck when a setup doesn’t pan out as expected.
Featured Model: Lorna Lynne
Our workshop’s practical shooting segment features professional model Lorna Lynne, whose portfolio exemplifies the techniques we’ll explore. You can see Lorna featured in several photos on this page. Session Fee: $175
Date: January 30th 2025
Time: 2:00p – 5:00pm – SIGN UPS CLOSED
Workshop Structure:
The first hour will focus on instruction, where I will demonstrate various lighting techniques and setups. This segment will not involve a model, allowing us to concentrate solely on understanding and configuring the lighting.
In the following two-hour session, our model will join us for a guided, practical shoot. I will demonstrate how to apply the lighting techniques and styles discussed in the first hour, with multiple scene setups and outfit changes to provide a diverse range of creative opportunities.
To ensure a fair and productive experience, I will manage the shooting schedule. Each participant will have dedicated time with the model, while others can capture additional perspectives from alternate angles. This structured approach guarantees equal opportunities for everyone to create exceptional images and enhance their portfolio.
Space will be limited to 4 attendees.
